Survival Swimming & SwimSafer

SwimSafer is Singapore's national water safety pathway — six stages running from Stage 1 up through Bronze, Silver and Gold. Most children meet it exactly once, in Primary 3, in a cohort of thirty with limited pool time.

That programme is built to give every child a floor of water safety. It is not built to turn your individual child into a swimmer, and it never claimed to be. So if yours came home with a Stage 1 certificate and still cannot manage a length, nothing has gone wrong. Stages 2 and 3 are where swimming actually happens, and those almost always happen outside school.

This is for you if any of these sound familiar

  • Your child finished the school programme and you want them to carry on properly
  • You want the certification recognised by schools, CCAs and water sports bodies here
  • You care more about the survival skills — treading, floating, self-rescue, staying calm in clothes — than about strokes looking pretty
  • Your child needs a clear ladder with a visible next rung to stay motivated

What we coach at each stage

  1. The water work

Every stage has a practical assessment, and you have to be judged fully competent — not "good enough on the day". We coach to that standard rather than to the minimum.

  2. The theory quiz

Every stage also has an online theory quiz covering safety, environment, health, emergencies and rescues, and you need 90% to pass. That number catches people out — a child who out-swims everyone in the lane can still be held up by the quiz. We run the theory alongside the water work instead of leaving it to the week before.

  3. Assessment and certificates

Since 1 July 2025, SwimSafer assessments outside school run through CAMS, the national platform operated by Singapore Aquatics, and the e-certificate is collected there. School assessments issue their certificates through FileSG. Coach Kes is a SwimSafer Certified Assessor, so none of this is a mystery on our side.

  4. Clothed swimming

From Bronze onward the assessment puts clothes on your child — shorts and a t-shirt, later long pants and a flotation device. This is the best thing in the whole syllabus. Nobody falls into a pool wearing goggles and a swim cap.

The six stages, in plain English

Stages 1 to 3 are numbered. Stages 4, 5 and 6 are the named awards — Bronze, Silver and Gold. Children usually refer to them by colour.

Stage Colour What it actually asks for
Stage 1 Yellow Safe entry and exit, floating, gliding, an introduction to life jackets, and around 10 m of front swimming. Water confidence, not swimming.
Stage 2 Orange 25 m on the front in any stroke, plus 15 m on the back. The first stage where "my child can swim" starts to be true.
Stage 3 Green Recognisable strokes rather than survival thrashing, comfort in deep water, and the personal water safety skills that go with it.
Bronze (4) Blue 100 m across four strokes, plus rescue and survival skills. Part of it is assessed in shorts and a t-shirt over swimwear.
Silver (5) Purple 200 m of varied strokes within a set time, diving fundamentals, and survival scenarios in long pants, t-shirt and a flotation device.
Gold (6) Black Extended endurance swimming, advanced self-rescue, and improvising a flotation device from whatever you happen to be wearing.

How long it really takes

Per stage
Roughly 8–16 lessons, depending on the starting point and how often your child swims
Stages 1–3, nervous beginner
Most children take 6–9 months of weekly lessons
Full pathway to Gold
A couple of years, realistically — and only for children who actually want it
What moves the number
Age, consistency and group size. Weekly beats intensive-then-nothing every time

When this is the wrong programme

Honest answer: you do not always need the certificate. If your goal is a child who is safe around water and enjoys a pool, the skills matter and the paperwork does not.

It earns its keep when your child wants water sports or CCAs that ask for proof of competency, when a school or institution requires it, or when they are heading toward lifesaving qualifications later. If none of that applies, do not force the pathway — we will tell you so.

Format & class size

The SwimSafer recommended maximum class size is 10, and we offer that at $120/month at public pools for parents who want the best value. Most of our SwimSafer students sit in a Quartet of four or smaller, because correcting a stroke requires the coach to actually see it.

Survival Swimming questions, answered honestly

My child already did SwimSafer at school. Do we start again from Stage 1?

No. We watch them swim, work out where they genuinely are, and start from there. Sometimes that is mid-Stage 2 even though the certificate says Stage 1 — and occasionally it is the other way round.

What do the assessments cost?

Assessment fees are charged by SportSG, not by us — typically $50–$80 per stage, and only when your child is genuinely ready. We do not put a child in for an assessment to hit a target.

Can you assess as well as teach?

Coach Kes is a SwimSafer Certified Assessor (SAQ) as well as a certified instructor. Assessments themselves are booked through the national CAMS platform.

More general questions — fees, pools, wet weather — are answered on the main FAQ.

Not sure if this is the right programme?

Message me the age, the current level and what you're hoping for. I'll tell you which programme fits — including if the answer is none of them.
