Adult swimming lessons in Singapore
Most adults who message us start with an apology. They are embarrassed it has taken this long, or they had one bad experience as a child — rushed, laughed at, pushed in — and have avoided pools ever since. None of that needs an apology. It is the most common story we hear, and it is the reason Star Swim exists.
Adults learn differently from children, and often faster: you can act on a correction the first time you hear it. What slows adults down is not ability, it is tension. So the early lessons are about getting comfortable enough that your body stops fighting the water. After that, the strokes come quickly.
First trial lesson from $30+ (45 minutes) · No commitment
This is for you if any of these sound familiar
- You never learned, and would rather not be the only one in the family who cannot swim
- You are frightened of deep water, or of putting your face in
- You can stay afloat, but one length leaves you exhausted
- Your child is having lessons and you want to be able to get in the pool with them
- You would rather learn at your own condo pool than at a busy public one
How adult lessons run
-
A trial with no agenda
We find out where you actually are. For some adults that is floating already; for others it is standing comfortably in chest-deep water. Either is a fine place to start. The trial is from $30 for 45 minutes, with no commitment after it.
-
Breathing and floating
Breathing out under water, then floating on your front and back. Almost every adult who "sinks" is holding their breath and lifting their head. Fix those two things and the water starts holding you up.
-
Breaststroke
Usually the first complete stroke, because the head-up breathing feels safer. This is where most adults realise they are going to be able to do this.
-
Front crawl, if you want it
Plenty of adults stop at a comfortable breaststroke, and that is a reasonable place to stop. If you want freestyle — for fitness, or a triathlon one day — it comes next, and it is the stroke where breathing technique matters most.
-
Deep water
Swimming a length is not the same as being safe. Before we call it done, you will tread water and float where you cannot stand, so a hotel pool or a boat trip stops being a worry.
How long it really takes
- Complete beginner to first stroke
- Varies widely with how relaxed you are in water. One of our adult learners went from nothing to 100m breaststroke in twelve lessons
- If you are nervous of water
- Expect the first few lessons to be about comfort rather than swimming. That is not wasted time — it is what makes the rest fast
- Adding front crawl
- Usually a further 2–3 months of weekly lessons once breaststroke is solid
- How often
- Weekly is the minimum that works. Weekly beats intensive-then-nothing every time
When this is the wrong programme
If you can already swim lengths and want a better or faster stroke — for triathlon, open water or fitness — you want Stroke Correction. Same coach, different goal.
And if you are looking for a large adult group at the lowest price, we are probably not the right fit. Adult beginners with us usually learn 1-on-1 or in a Duo, because that is what works for nervous adults.
Format & class size
1-on-1, or a Duo with your partner, a friend or a colleague. Four lessons a month, 45 minutes each, paid monthly by PayNow.

Adult Swimming questions, answered honestly
Am I too old to learn to swim?
Age changes how quickly the strokes come, not whether they come. What matters is whether you can relax enough in water to float, and that is a coaching problem rather than an age problem.
How many lessons until I can swim?
Nobody honest can give you a number before seeing you in the water, and anyone who promises "swim in 4 lessons" is selling the package, not the result. What we can tell you: one of our adult learners went from nothing to 100m breaststroke in twelve lessons, and nervous beginners usually spend the first few lessons on comfort before any stroke work. The trial is where we give you a real estimate for you.
I have a health condition or an old injury. Can I still learn?
Usually, yes — but tell us before the trial, not halfway through a lesson. Back, knee and shoulder problems, asthma, high blood pressure, anything that affects your breathing or balance: we would rather know and plan for it. If you are not sure swimming is safe for you, ask your doctor first. For the common pool problems — swimmer's ear, sore shoulders, breaststroke knee — see what actually goes wrong in the pool.
I have a holiday or a work trip coming up. Can I cram lessons before it?
You can book more than one lesson a week, but be realistic about what it buys you. Comfort in water builds between lessons as much as during them, so three weeks of daily lessons does not equal three months of weekly ones. Tell us the date and what you want to be able to do by then — float, tread water, swim a length — and we will tell you honestly whether it is achievable.
I am genuinely scared of water. Is that a problem?
No. It is the most common starting point for adults, and it is why we teach adults individually. A group does not fix fear — it just gives you an audience. We do not move on until you are ready, and nobody will push you under or take you into deep water before you ask to go.
Can lessons be at my condo?
Yes, if your condo allows external coaches. Some managements want the coach registered first. WhatsApp us your condo name and we will tell you what is involved.
Will I be learning next to children?
No. Adult lessons are 1-on-1, or a Duo with another adult you choose. It is you and the coach.
What do I need to bring?
Swimsuit and goggles, plus a swim cap if the pool requires one. Floats and boards come from us.
More general questions — fees, pools, wet weather — are answered on the main FAQ.
