Stroke Correction

You can already swim. That is not the problem. The problem is that fifty metres leaves you breathing like you have just run a kilometre, or your freestyle quietly veers to one side, or your breaststroke feels like it is fighting the water rather than using it.

The fix is almost always smaller than people expect — a head position, a breathing timing, a catch that starts a fraction too early. But you cannot see your own stroke, which is exactly why this is the one thing that does not improve by swimming more laps.

Stroke Correction lesson at a Singapore pool with Star Swim Aquatic

This is for you if any of these sound familiar

  • You are a triathlete or open-water swimmer and the swim leg is your weakest discipline
  • You taught yourself, it works, and you suspect it shows
  • Your child swims competitively and has plateaued
  • You have one decent stroke and three bad ones
  • You get out of the pool with sore shoulders or a sore lower back

What we actually fix

  1. Front crawl

Body position and rotation first, then the catch, then bilateral breathing and timing. Most freestyle problems are a legs-sinking problem wearing a disguise.

  2. Breaststroke

The pull–breathe–kick–glide sequence, which is the single most commonly mistimed thing in the pool. Get the order right and the stroke stops feeling like hard work.

  3. Backstroke

Head stillness, body rotation, and swimming in an actual straight line without checking the ceiling every five strokes.

  4. Butterfly

Undulation and the two-kick timing. Butterfly is not a strength stroke — it is a rhythm stroke that people try to muscle.

  5. Turns, starts and sighting

If you are racing in a pool, turns and finishes. If you are racing in open water, sighting and pacing instead.

How long it really takes

First lesson
Most people feel a difference the same session — usually from one change, not ten
By lesson four
The new version holds while you are thinking about it
Lessons 8–12
Rebuilding a stroke you have swum wrong for twenty years takes this long to become automatic under fatigue

When this is the wrong programme

This is not a fitness programme. If you want to swim further rather than better, you do not need a coach — you need to get in the pool three times a week.

Come to us when technique is the ceiling, not when mileage is.

Format & class size

1-on-1 or Duo only. A group of eight cannot work for this — the whole value is a coach watching one stroke closely enough to catch the thing you cannot feel. Individual lessons are $380/month at public pools, $400 at private pools.

Stroke Correction questions, answered honestly

How strong a swimmer do I need to be?

You need to be able to swim continuously without stopping to stand up. If you are not there yet, start with Learn to Swim — correcting a stroke that has not been built yet is a waste of your money.

Can you help specifically with triathlon or open water?

Yes. The priorities shift — sighting, bilateral breathing so you can adapt to chop and glare, and a pace you can hold with a bike leg waiting for you. It is a different set of goals from pool racing.

Will you record my stroke?

Where the pool allows it, video makes a real difference — most people simply do not believe what their legs are doing until they see it. Ask us about your pool and we will tell you what is possible there.

More general questions — fees, pools, wet weather — are answered on the main FAQ.

Not sure if this is the right programme?

Message me the age, the current level and what you're hoping for. I'll tell you which programme fits — including if the answer is none of them.
