Learn to Swim

Most people who come to us for beginner lessons are not really beginners. They are restarters — a child who was hurried through a school programme, or an adult who had one bad afternoon at twelve and never went back.

We start from where you actually are, not from where a syllabus says you should be. For a genuinely nervous learner the first lesson might be nothing but getting a face wet and staying calm about it. That is not wasted time. It is the reason the next ten lessons work.

Learn to Swim lesson at a Singapore pool with Star Swim Aquatic

This is for you if any of these sound familiar

  • Your child has never had a lesson — or has had lessons and still cannot swim a length
  • Your child is frightened of the water. About a quarter of our students start here
  • You are an adult who never learned, and would rather not be the only one in the family who cannot
  • Your child passed SwimSafer Stage 1 at school and you have realised that is not the same as swimming

How the progression actually runs

  1. Water confidence

Entries and exits, going under, blowing bubbles, opening eyes below the surface. Nothing above this line works until this one does, so we do not skip past it to make a lesson look productive.

  2. Floating and gliding

Front float, back float, push-and-glide. This is the stage rushed programmes cut, and it is the one that actually saves lives — a child who can roll onto their back and float has bought themselves time.

  3. Breathing and kicking

Rhythmic breathing, flutter kick, streamlined body position. Most beginners are not weak, they are simply fighting the water with their head too high.

  4. Breaststroke

Usually the first complete stroke, because the head-up breathing feels safer. For most children aged 6 and over, confident breaststroke arrives in 3–4 months of weekly lessons.

  5. Front crawl

Normally another 2–3 months after breaststroke is solid. Once both strokes are there, your child can swim in any pool in Singapore without you watching from the edge.

How long it really takes

Age 6+, from scratch
Confident breaststroke in 3–4 months of weekly lessons
Age 4–5
Closer to 5–6 months. Motor coordination is still developing — this is normal, not a problem
Adding front crawl
A further 2–3 months after breaststroke
Adult beginners
Varies widely. One of our adult learners went from nothing to 100m breaststroke in twelve lessons

When this is the wrong programme

If your child already swims lengths and you want the stroke to look better, you want Stroke Correction, not this.

And if the issue is fear rather than skill, start 1-on-1. A group class does not fix fear — it just gives the child an audience.

Format & class size

Four lessons a month, 45 minutes each, paid monthly by PayNow. Group sizes run from 8–10 down to 1-on-1; most nervous beginners start individually and move into a small group once the fear has gone rather than before.

Learn to Swim questions, answered honestly

Do you teach adults, or only children?

Both. Adult beginners usually take 1-on-1 or Duo lessons — not because they are slower, but because most adults would rather not learn alongside seven primary schoolers. Progress often surprises people: an adult can act on a correction the first time they hear it.

What does my child need to bring?

Goggles, swimsuit, swim cap. That is the whole list. Floats, boards and any teaching aids come from us.

How soon can we start?

Usually the same week, depending on your preferred pool and time slot. WhatsApp us your postcode and we will tell you which pools we already run classes at near you.

More general questions — fees, pools, wet weather — are answered on the main FAQ.

Not sure if this is the right programme?

Message me the age, the current level and what you're hoping for. I'll tell you which programme fits — including if the answer is none of them.
